RV fires can be very dangerous, as an RV can be up in flames in a matter of minutes. They also often end in explosions because of the propane tanks stored on board. Here are some fire safety tips to help minimize the risk of a fire and to help keep you safe in the event of one.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is the most important factor in preventing a fire. The most common fires are caused from leaking fuel lines, shorts in electrical systems, refrigerator fires, fuel line leaks, and dry wheel bearings. It is important to inspect these vulnerable systems before you go on a trip.
Detectors
You should also install smoke, carbon monoxide, and propane detectors. They should all have different alarms and you should know which is which so you will know what the problem is when one goes off. It’s best to buy a higher end model because they detect problems quicker than the cheaper models.
Escape Plan
The most important thing to do in the event of a fire is to get out quickly You should have at least two routes in case one gets blocked off by a fire. You may have to use a window or hatch for the second route. You should keep these pathways clear and practice the route so that you will be able to get out as fast as possible in the event of a fire. Call the fire department as soon as you get out.
Extinguishers
You should also have a few fire extinguishers throughout your RV. Your primary goal is escaping the fire, but you do have a chance at putting it out if you can get it quickly before it starts to spread. Dry chemical extinguishers and foam extinguishers are the best choices because they are effective for fires caused by solid fuels like wood, fires caused by flammable liquids, and fires caused by electricity.
