RV Camping… The Dream

Susan J

The idea of heading out on the open road in your RV seems fantastic. The family is together, ready for new memories and adventures and I am sure you can imagine a family happily chanting road trip tunes out of joy of the planned trip. But what happens when things don’t turn out exactly as planned? Typically this is when the unimaginable occurs. That would never happen though, right? I may have a few family trips that we love to laugh about now. At that time, I would have to admit that we weren’t laughing.

Before taking trips in the old Class C, we always checked the gas and oil, and sometimes a small tune up would be in order. But there are always things that may not be checked out. For instance, the seat mount for the passenger seat. As you’re heading down the road and the seat completely fails, how do you fix it? Easy! How about a walking stick propped between the stove and the seat? Whatever works at the time will do!

Sometimes a decision is made to stay at a campground for a night while you’re simply passing through. In some areas, they may not have all amenities available that you are accustomed to. For example, as we were traveling west we come across the most convenient place to stay. Once we pulled in, we realized that a choice must be made between electricity and water! Then we had to determine which is needed more, heat or a shower? Lucky for us, we chose electricity. Then we found somewhere that we could fill containers of water to take back to the camper. It was an interesting stay to say the least!

There are always the unforeseen mechanical issues that occur, even after a tune up and oil change. This is very unfortunate, especially if you are traveling down the strip of Las Vegas. My family has fond memories of exploring the strip while a tow truck takes away our camper. In this situation an unexpected perk was staying in a hotel and having a night away from the camping life.  Room service? I don’t mind if I do! Lucky for us, it was a quick fix and we were on our way.

We always plan elaborate trips with time tightly stretched, so we don’t exactly plan for the mishaps that could occur. At the time, I realize that we may not have thought it was very funny or convenient, but we made memories that we love to laugh about at each family get together. It is easy to think, “This trip is ruined”, but remember to enjoy the time with your family and make the most of it. As long as everyone is safe, all is well!
